Staindrop Parish Council

About Staindrop

Staindrop is an historic village in Teesdale, which lies in the south-west of County Durham.

The Village is a thriving and vibrant community with lots of local organisations, a post office, general store, butchers, several more shops, a public house and two schools.

The layout of the village is linear and reflects its medieval origins, with many of the houses built of stone and clustered around a large village green. In about 2010, an historian and Curator of Raby Castle for many years, the late Liz Steele (also a former member of the Parish Council), prepared a brief article about the 18th century architecture of the village, particularly identifying the work of John Carr and James Paine. The article can be viewed and downloaded here.

The magnificent local church, St Mary’s, dates back to the late Anglo-Saxon period.

The village and parish sit amongst wonderful countryside. Raby Castle, with its Deer Park, is close by, as well as the ancient market town of Barnard Castle, a short drive away. Upper Teesdale is also only a short journey away and here you can find High Force, one of the highest waterfalls in England.
